Meet Kya, a gold bengal tiger who lives at the Southwick Zoo in mendon MA. She was born in captivity in November 2007. Typically tigers live 15 to 18 years. She is a mammal in the panthera tigres order. She is also known as the Indian or Royal tiger.
Bengal tigers are endangered – there about 5000 to 7000 of them in the wild. What a sad day for Mother Earth if this child should disappear forever.
In the last 64 years, the Bali, Java, Caspian, and South China tiger have become extinct.
“Like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher “standard of living” is worth its costs in things natural, wild, and free. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech.”
