Southwick Zoo has a very large field the zebras share with ostriches. They travel in a herd and seem to stay along the edges, periodically grazing inward. Most I think have been born into captivity so are just living their lives, in their captive culture.
What I love about the zoo is if we pay attention, we can really see mother nature’s patterns in the habitats, fur, and feathers. The zoo animals are ambassadors for the wild and while I have pangs of consciousness for their captivity, I am grateful for their service – so that young children and even adults can get near enough to them to learn to care about them and the places they live.
