A humpback whale was fishing as we entered Bishop Bay, British Columbia. We went to indulge in the hot springs after a couple of days underway, it was a real treat. The bay was deserted. Three whales were blowing, diving, trumpeting, showing their tails for us. When dark settled in they approached the ship. The bay was like a bowl, so the blows and songs would echo off the walls of trees – and the moon was rising off our stern. It was pure magic. I am from the east coast, so it is really unusual for me to see pine trees behind the fishing whale. The fjords here can be up to 800 feet deep. Finding an anchorage is a challenge because the bottom drops off quickly, so we tied a line to a big old pine tree.
